Yannis Michas (1938 – 2008) studied from 1955 to 1958 in the workshop of Kostas Iliadis and then at the Ecole des Metiers d ‘Art in Paris, from where he graduated in 1962. In his first works, influenced by constructivism, he drew rows of successive shapes, which he accentuated with complementary colors. In an effort to free the geometric form from the borders of the canvas, he began in 1974 to create embossed diptychs and triptychs with various additional materials – copper, wood or aluminum – as well as wall sculptures. In the 1980s he created visual games with grids, cardboard, sheets, which are based on capturing the shadow of the object on the canvas with the help of color and airbrush. At the same time he connected his abstract works with specific thematic references, through a series of titles that referred to the image (“Dialogues”, “Crosses”, “Landscapes”). In 1990 he returned to painting with oil paintings and painted wood, which detected the balances of two or more geometric shapes and lines on a flat surface. He had presented his works in solo exhibitions in Greece and had participated in group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
